HOW COOL ROOFS WORK

In the same way that a light-colored shirt keeps you cool on a hot summer’s day, reflective roofing bounces the light and heat away from your home instead of absorbing it. COOL ROOFING FOR LOW SLOPED ROOFS

There are 4 types of cool roofing that can be installed on low sloped roofs (flat roofs). These are BUR, single-ply, spray foam, and modified bitumen roofing. Each of them can be installed with highly reflective elements that help reduce heat gain in your property.

BUR COOL ROOFS

Built-up roofing is made by applying a base sheet, layers of fabric reinforcement, and in non-cool roof applications a black protective surface layer. BUR can be a cool roof type when it is installed correctly. It is made cool by using applying a cool coating over the dark asphaltic emulsion, using marble chips or gay slag in the asphalt coating, or other reflective mineral granules.

SPRAY FOAM COOL ROOFS

Spray foam roofing is made from polyurethane and is made by combining to liquid chemicals that react and then expand. This creates a single solid piece which self-adheres to the roof. The protective coating in a spray foam roof is absolutely critical as the foam is susceptible to moisture, UV, and mechanical damage. Spray foam roofing is naturally reflective and doesn’t require additional reflective layers.

SINGLE-PLY COOL ROOFS

Cool roofs made from single ply roofing are applied as pre-fabricated sheets. They are rolled out onto the roof and attached via mechanical fasteners, held in place with a ballast, or even adhered with chemical adhesives. This type of roofing can be a cool roof when it is made with reflective elements to begin with or are coated with a reflective coating.

MODIFIED BITUMEN COOL ROOFS

Much like BUR roofing modified bitumen consists of layers of fabric, rubber, plastics and are coated with mineral granules or smooth finishes. They are made ready to install at the factor and then transported to worksites for installation already made into layers. Modified bitumen is a cool roof type when it is made that way at the factory.

Steep sloped roofs can also be made cool when they are made with reflective roofing materials. The two most common types of roofing are tile roofing and shingle roofing for steep slopes.

TILE COOL ROOFS

Tile roofing is made from concrete, slate, and clay. Tiles may be glazed to ensure they are waterproof or coated to offer surface properties or custom colors. They are made into a cool roof material type when they are either coated with reflective surface treatments or simply have a natural solar reflectivity that qualifies them as a cool roof option.
